Mystery Plait Tote

The handle of this tote is braided using the super-cool “mystery plait” technique used in traditional leather crafting. I’ve adapted it to make in fabric so that the handle emerges seamlessly from the body of the tote, giving a unique designer look & satisfyingly thick, strong handle. The base has a pleated detail to give a soft, up-to-date shape.

The tote is fully lined with an internal pocket & is a great practical everyday size (click on image below for the finished dimensions).

This design would suit medium to heavyweight cotton, canvas, linen, denim, etc.

This pattern is available to print on both A4 (210 x 297 mm) paper or Letter (8.5″ x 11″) size paper.

You will need:

-Medium to heavyweight fabric for exterior & facing: 1.25m length of fabric (120 -140 cm wide off the roll)

-fusible (iron-on) medium -heavyweight interfacing approx. 80 x 70 cm.

-medium to heavyweight fabric for lining, approx. 50cm length of fabric (120 -140 cm wide off the roll). NB using a lining which is not too lightweight will help add body to the tote.

-Sewing machine needle suitable for sewing heavy weight fabrics.

Mini Sunray Convertible Clutch

This pattern adapts the gorgeous front pleating detail of my highly popular Sunray Clutch into a cute mini size, with the option to add a useful wrist strap that you can pop in or out -converting the clutch into a wristlet as you please.

It’s closed with a sunken/ hidden zip construction for a clean, professional-looking finish. The clutch is fully lined & has an internal pocket for extra practicality.

The finished clutch will measure approx. 19cm wide x 13 cm tall (71/2″ x 5″) with a 5cm (2″) wide base at the widest part -a cute but practical shape for evening or weddings.

This design would suit medium to heavyweight satins incl. shantung, brocades, jacquards…or lighter weight fabrics with the addition of some fusible interfacing to add body. Not so suitable for fabrics which crease heavily, such as pure linens.

You will need:

*Fabric for the clutch exterior: at least approx. a 35 x 60cm(14” x 24”) piece. If buying off the roll you will need a 35cm (14“) length.

*Fabric for lining: at least approx. 65 x 20cm (25 1/2” x 8”). If buying off the roll you will need a 20cm (8”) length.

*Mid-weight fusible woven interfacing: Required for Pocket, facings & optional strap. In addition, all but the very stiffest fabrics will benefit from fusing interfacing to the entire front & back panels to add body. It is also advisible to reinforce the lining panels with a fusible interfacing, especially if using a slippy or lightweight lining fabric. Highly recommended: Pellon ShapeFlex Woven Fusible #SF-101 or Vilene Woven fusible G700. To cover both lining, exterior & all other required panels: if 90cm (35 1/2”) wide, 40cm(16”) length; if 51cm(20”) wide, 70cm(27 1/2”)length.

*Non-Fusible Stabilizer: For a firm/ boxy clutch use a non-fusible Heavy-weight interfacing, such as “Vilene Extra-Heavy Sew-in” (this comes in 90cm/35” width, you need 20cm/8” length) or “Pellon Peltex 70 Sew-in Ultra firm (this comes in 51cm/20” width -you need 28cm/11“ length). For a softer, more “pouchy” feel try non-fusible Hair Canvas -a woven stabilizer used in tailoring.

*Zip: Closed end zip, minimum 25cm/10” length (longer is fine as the excess can be trimmed), 6mm (3/16th“) width teeth. The zip can be nylon or metal but it’s important that the teeth are not narrower than this.

*Hemming Tape: 1.5 -2.5cm (5/8” -1”) width fusible tape, such as “Wondaweb”.

tools required: domestic sewing machine, scissors, scalpel, iron, needle & thread, chalk or pencil, pins.

Little Zipped Pouches

With this pattern you can choose from a simple, flat pouch -great for cosmetics, pills, coins, ipod, blackberry etc, etc… or one with cute pleats, giving extra volume and making it perfect for a Camera case or mini Clutch. Add an optional wrist strap for even more practicality. Patterns and instructions for all 3 variations are included.

It’s closed with a sunken zip construction for a clean, professional-looking finish. The pouch is fully lined with a padded lining to give shape and protection.

The finished pouch will measure approx. 14 cm wide x 8 cm tall.

A leather tassel zip pull adds a perfect finishing touch. Follow my free tutorial here.

This design would suit medium to heavyweight fabrics incl. denim, drill, canvas, heavy satin, brocade, heavy nylon, etc…or lighter weight fabrics with the addition of some fusible interfacing to add body. Not so suitable for fabrics which crease heavily, such as pure linens.
